Why so many people (especially in the media) place so much significance on each Partyβs manifesto pledges is quite beyond me. When it comes to the next election the most logical place for the media to start is the manifesto pledges made by the incumbent Party at the last GE but hardly anyone ever does in anything other than an ad-hoc way. This makes the manifestos pretty much pointless for anything other than promotional purposes doesn't it? They are not promises they are marketing tools.
